Katja Herbers was born in Germany and was the daughter of Vera Beths, a violinist and Werner Herbers, an oboist. While growing up, Katja Herbers accompanied her mother on a trip through America as part of the chamber group L'Archibudelli. Her mother remarried cellist Anner Bylsma, and her father got married to costume designer Leonie Polak who introduced her to the theater.
